Eva Carroll is a concertina player and singer from Feakle, East Clare. Eva teaches concertina students - beginners , intermediate and advanced - every week. She teaches the traditional Irish dance music repertoire - both common session tunes and not so common ones, as well as newly-composed tunes. She teaches mainly by ear which she has found to be the most successful method of teaching and learning traditional Irish music. In her lessons, she breaks down the tune bit by bit to focus on and clearly explain technique, rhythm, fingering, phrasing, ornamentation and chords. Following each lesson, she provides ABC notation and recordings of the tunes (one played slowly and one sped up to typical playing pace). Eva can prepare students for competitions, Fleadhs and session - playing. In the Irish singing lessons, Eva will share with you playlists of Irish songs - including both well-known songs and not so common ones - and help you to choose songs that fit your voice. She will provide you with the background to the song - its origin and history - to ground you in the context of the song while you sing. She can teach both Sean- nós (old style, Irish language singing) and English language songs. She will provide translations of Irish language songs and go through pronunciation with you. In the lessons, she will break down the song bit by bit to clearly explain the phrasing and ornamentation of Irish singing. She can recommend recordings of singers - both old and new - to listen to outside of classes. As a once-extremely shy performer who thought she would never play​/​sing a note in public, who struggled to pick up music by ear and who now makes a living from music, Eva understands the anxiety and vulnerability that can come with musical performance and will be there to guide you without judgement in your trad music journey!
