How Kayley Works
What is Kayley and how does it work?
Kayley is an online marketplace for live, one-on-one lessons in Irish and other traditional music. Teachers set their own rates and availability; you browse by instrument, style, and budget, then book a time that works for you. Lessons happen over video calls, so you can learn from an expert teacher wherever you are. We also run occasional group workshops and practice circles.
You can see the full step-by-step for students and teachers on our home page, or read more about who we are.
Who teaches on Kayley?
Kayley is a young platform, and we are growing slowly and deliberately. Listings aren't open to everyone: teachers on the platform have taught at festivals and local music schools, hold degrees in traditional music, or have placed at regional or All-Ireland Fleadh competitions.
Teachers are independent, and set their own rates, availability, and lesson approach. Each listing includes the teacher's background, so you can choose someone whose style and experience suit you.
How does payment work?
Payments are processed securely through Stripe. When a student requests a booking, their card is authorized but not charged. The charge is completed once the teacher confirms. If the booking isn't accepted, the request is cancelled.
Kayley holds the payment and releases it to the teacher after the lesson is complete.
Is it possible to reschedule or cancel?
If you need to move a lesson, message your teacher directly. Most scheduling changes are sorted out between the two of you, and teachers are generally happy to accommodate.
If you need to cancel, let your teacher know as soon as you can, as they've set that time aside for you. Then email support@kayley.io to cancel the booking, your payment wll be refunded.
For Students
How do I find the right teacher?
Browse by instrument, or search a teacher's name if someone's been recommended to you. Each listing includes the teacher's background, playing style, rate, and availability, so you can find someone who fits what you're looking for.
If you're not sure whether a teacher is a good match, click "Contact" below "About the listing author" at the bottom of the listing and message them before booking. Teachers are happy to answer questions about their approach or what a first lesson might cover.
How do I book a lesson?
Find a time on the teacher's availability calendar and click "Request to book." You'll get an email once the booking is accepted by the teacher. At the scheduled time, click the video chat link on the teacher's listing page to join the lesson.
What if I need to reschedule the lesson?
If you need to change the time after booking, message your teacher directly and agree on a new time that works for both of you.
- If the new time is within a day of your booked lesson, you don't need to change anything on the site. Just both join the video chat link at your agreed time (the link works at any time).
- If the new time is more than a day away, email support@kayley.io to cancel the original booking, then book again at the new time.
What time zone are the availability calendars shown in?
The availability calendar on each listing displays time in the teacher's local time zone. See the "Time Zone of Calendar" field on the listing. If you're not located in the same time zone, you will have to convert the time. You can do so by using an online converter such as this one.
What's the recommended Zoom setting for my lesson?
Step 1. Open audio settings
Join the meeting from the Zoom App (joining via the browser has fewer audio options). Click on the "^" button next to the microphone symbol on the bottom left, click on "Audio settings"
Step 2. Choose "Original sound for musicians"
Under "Audio Profile", choose "Original sound for musicians", and check "High fidelity music mode" and "Echo cancellation". Click "close" on the top right corner to return to the meeting.
Step 3. Toggle on "Original sound for musicians"
Within the meeting room, toggle on "Original sound for musicians" in the top left corner of the screen.
For Teachers
How do I start teaching on Kayley?
Sign up as a user, then email support@kayley.io to tell us about your teaching background and experience. We'll follow up to talk through your listing and get you set up.
Once your listing is live, you set your own rates, availability, and lesson approach. You can also share your listing link with anyone who asks about lessons, so they can book and pay in one place.
How do I manage my availability?
Set a default weekly schedule for the hours you're typically available to teach. This repeats automatically, so you don't need to update it week to week.
For one-off changes, use availability exceptions. These override your default schedule for specific dates, so you can block out a few weeks while you're on tour, or open up a block of time you wouldn't normally teach.
Students book directly from what your calendar shows, so update it whenever your schedule changes. An out-of-date calendar is the most common cause of scheduling problems.
What if I or the student need to reschedule a confirmed lesson?
Update your availability around the lesson date, then ask the student to choose a new time.
- If the new time is within a day of the booked lesson, no change is needed on the site. Just both join the video chat link at your agreed time (the link works at any time).
- If the new time is more than a day later, email support@kayley.io to request cancellation, and ask the student to book again at the new time.
How and when do I get paid?
Payments are handled through Stripe. Add your payout details in your account settings when you set up your listing.
When a student books, Kayley holds the payment and releases it to you after the lesson is complete. Payment generally arrives in your bank account about a week after the lesson.
How do I create a permanent video call meeting link?
You set up a permanent Zoom meeting link for Kayley lessons when you create your listing. Students click it to join at your lesson time.
Step 1. Create an account
If you don't already have a zoom account, you can sign up for free here. Note that meetings are limited to 40 minutes with the free account.
Step 2. Go to advanced account settings
Log into your Zoom account via web browser to manage advanced account settings.
Step 3. Create a Recurring Meeting for Kayley Lessons
Once you've logged in, click on "Meetings" in the left tool bar, then click "+ schedule a meeting" on the right.
Check the box for "Recurring meeting" then choose "No Fixed Time" for recurrence. For meeting ID, choose "Generate automatically". It is recommended that you use "Passcode" and "Waiting Room" for security purposes.
Step 4. Copy meeting link
After saving the meeting, you can copy the permanent link by clicking on the copy symbol to the right of the Invite Link. This invite should be active until you delete the recurring meeting.
