Playing for the Occasion: Session, Ensemble, Stage & Céilí Level: [Advanced Beginner​/​Intermediate] Date: Saturday October 3rd | Time: 12–1pm Eastern (5pm Irish ​/​ 9am Pacific) The same tune isn't played the same way everywhere. What works in a session can fail to engage on stage, and playing for a céilí calls for different emphasis than performing in an ensemble. Learning how each setting works, and what it asks of you, will make you a more versatile player. In this workshop, John Nolan will teach how he approaches a tune for each of the different settings. He will use a popular reel, The Sally Gardens, to demonstrate how speed, emphasis, and ornamentation can shift to suit the occasion. John Nolan was the first American-born musician to win the Senior All-Ireland Championship on the button accordion, and a Mid-Atlantic Comhaltas Hall of Fame inductee. He has been playing and teaching for over forty years. This will be a small-group workshop, with time for Q&A at the end.
