Fiddle Workshop with Niall Mulligan Sept 12

Making Dance Tunes Danceable: Fiddle Workshop with Niall Mulligan Level: Beginner/Intermediate Date: Saturday Sept 12 | Time: 12–1pm Eastern (5pm Irish / 9am Pacific) A good dance tune should make you want to move. What separates a tune that merely sounds correct from one that lifts the room and sets feet moving? In this one-hour workshop, Niall Mulligan demonstrates what gives Irish fiddling its drive and lift, and how that departs from a classical approach. He'll discuss rhythmic patterns of common dance tunes, bowing, how ornaments drive the music, and how to make tunes more dancer friendly. He will also include some different dance tune examples, with materials provided prior to the workshop. Niall has over thirty years of teaching experience across all levels of traditional fiddle, with students who've earned Mid-Atlantic and All-Ireland fiddle titles. He has played at feiseanna, ceilithe and Oireachtasai throughout Ireland, The UK & USA. His own path from Ireland to New York came through being a former dancer with Riverdance, giving him a firsthand feel for what makes a tune move a dancer. This will be a small-group workshop, with time for Q&A at the end.
